Project Updates 08.01.17

Hey all! Sorry for my absence, I actually wanted to finish some projects before posting my next update but that hasn’t happened.

I was working on this scarf using gorgeous cotton yarn from the Great Adirondack Yarn Co., but I had to unravel it because I was making it too wide and I wouldn’t have had enough yarn to complete it. I was thinking of buying more of it, but this particular colorway is out of stock everywhere near me. Sigh!

Next up is the socks I’ve been working on using the Crystal Palace yarns. I have two mismatched socks done, and I’ve started the third one. Here is the second one I just finished last week:

In other news, I did end up scooping up some more Crystal Palace yarns from my LYS, so I’m all stocked up on those for the time being (possibly forever). This picture is very purple but it’s the only one I have at the moment. More to come.

I’ve also been watercolor painting a lot lately, using my new espresso machine, and playing around with makeup art. I also got a new phone stand and will hopefully be making more youtube videos!

Sock Update!

Today I finished my first sock that I’ve been working on.

It’s not perfect but it’s a fine first attempt. I’m planning on making three more socks with my remaining yarn in this colorway, so two of them will be more refined and one will be about identical. That should be some fun knitting during my 6 am shift tomorrow!

After work tomorrow I will also be stopping by Yarn in Montpelier to pick up some more of the Crystal Palace Yarn I love so much. One of my friends actually wired me $6.80 because I mentioned I wanted some more.

More updates to come! Hopefully the next few socks will go quicker!

First Pair of Socks

I’ve never knitted socks before, but I have just started my first pair and I’m pretty excited about it.

After this, I am planning on knitting some as holiday presents for my family members.  Right now I am using a pattern I got from Must Love Yarn, a great LYS in Shelburne, Vermont. I got it for free during the annual Great Northern Yarn Haul! Check out my ongoing blog post about the yarn haul pinned at the top of my blog.

I am using a yarn by Crystal Palace Yarns, now sadly discontinued, from their Danube line.

Yarn in Montpelier still has some of the Crystal Palace Yarns in stock, so I’m planning on heading there and scooping some up before they disappear forever. Here’s a bonus look at the ones I currently have that I might grab matches for:

That’s all for now! Keep an eye out for more updates on my other projects!

Layered Hat PROGRESS

Hey guys! I have a lot of progress to report but I haven’t had much time to sit down and write it out, so for now I’ll just talk about this winter hat I’ve been working on.

I finished the (very simple) lining and next I will move on to the wool outer shell.

I will, however, be putting this hat on hold for a bit as I have some other projects I’m working on. More on that to come!

Stay tuned for more updates on this, as well as hearing about some of the more exciting projects I have planned. Cheers!

Practice Sweater Update

Hi everyone! I’ve made some progress on that practice raglan sweater I’ve been working on.

As I suspected before, the collar is way way too big, but honestly it doesn’t matter that much. I’ll either take it in after the sweater is finished, or I’ll unravel the sweater and redo it. Either way, I just want to get the sweater done because it’s mainly for practice and to make sure I can really do it.

As you can see, this is also for practice doing yarn overs and lace knitting.

I’m also working on some other lace practice, so keep an eye out for my post about that!

My Yarn Stash

Hi everyone, this post will include everything in my yarn stash that is not currently in my knitting bag and/or part of a WIP. While I don’t have a huge stash, I do have a bit of a collection that I’m hoping to work my way through over the next two months.

Many of these skeins are small and mainly suited for hats and mittens, and since my family and I only need so many winter accessories, I will post a number of them on Etsy. I also have a number of hats I made years ago that I’m planning on frogging and reworking at some point. More details on these, and other future projects, in my upcoming knitting queue.

Now, on to my collection. I will start with my least favorites and end with the ones I’m saving for something special.

Old, Unknown, Unlabeled Yarns and Scraps

I could probably make a guess at what most of these are, but I haven’t saved the labels for any of them.

Berocco Yarns

The first yarn was made into a hat for my boyfriend (which I may add more onto later).

Miscellaneous Yarns

Yarns that I’ve picked up here and there and don’t have a definitive plan for yet.

Planned Yarns

I’m going to use the yarns below to make a sweater for my boyfriend.

And these yarns are going to be for a lacy cropped sweater for myself:img_4564

Crystal Palace Yarns

I love these skeins, they’re so so soft and perfect for gloves and hats. Sadly, they were discontinued, but there is still some left in stock in my LYS.

Wollelfe Yarns

These gorgeous yarns were given to me as a gift about a year ago. I’m still saving them for something special, maybe a cropped top or shawl. I’m not sure yet.

I do have some other yarns that I didn’t include here, either because I’m using/about to use them for something, or because I just bought them. Those will be included in later posts. Cheers!

The Great Northern Yarn Haul

This will be my first year participating in an event taking place across Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. This year, 23 yarn shops are participating in the tour. The event kicks off this evening and I will be stopping by Yarn in Montpelier to pick up my brochure (and hopefully tote bag as well).

More information can be found at this facebook page and this blog post.

This post will be featured at the top of my blog and I will be updating it reguarly with each shop I visit on the tour and (hopefully) photographs and details about each one!

I’m super excited to participate as I have only visited a few of the shops in the state and I know there are quite a few of them. Let me know in the comments if you have participated in the tour before or if you are participating this year!

Update 07/13/2017

I haven’t had the time to update lately, but I did go to a kickoff party last Friday at Yarn in Montpelier! Here’s a quick look at some of the things I got.

The orange yarn was given to me as a door prize, and the Wonderland Yarn was what I bought to qualify for these lovely canvas bags!

In my upcoming posts, I’ll be talking about lace knitting, recent purchases, birthday gifts, and custom patterns! Subscribe and stay tuned!

Knitting Progress Update 07.05.2017

Last night, I finally finished these fingerless gloves I’ve been putting off for ages and… I accidentally made one of them too long. This is what happens when you don’t count rows, folks.

(It’s actually because I waited way too long to make the second glove after I made the first one. Like, weeks too long.)

That being said, they did come out very pretty and soft, and I have plenty of yarn left in the skein (details on the yarn in my last post). I will most likely make two more gloves, one of each length, but I’m going to work on my other projects before finishing that up.

I finished up these gloves while at my dad’s polo game during the day yesterday, and later at a Fourth of July celebration with fireworks in the evening. I’ve gotten into the habit of bringing my knitting with me to work, cafes, and social events. It helps me to not bite my nails or snack on junk food too much, as well as just being something productive to keep me busy.

Below are some pictures of the fireworks last night!

Bonus: a picture of my trusty knitting bag sitting on my passenger seat during work. It pretty much comes with me now every time I go somewhere in my car.

I will be trying to post something every day — either a progress update or something else. Subscribe to littleyarns to hear more about my ongoing and future projects, as well as see my progress as I strive to improve my skills. Thanks for reading!

Current WIPs

I currently have 3 projects going and 4 more planned out.

Currently working on:

1. A white wool hat with soft blue multicolor lining.

The wool is from Mt. Ascutney View Farm, but unfortunately I don’t have any info on the blue yarn because I got it awhile ago and didn’t keep the label.

I have made quite a few hats before (at least 8-10), but I have never used a patterns as most of them have been pretty simple. I will make a post with pictures of my past projects at some point.

2. A navy blue cotton practice sweater with yarn over increases.

This 100% cotton yarn is a mill end I picked up from A.C. Moore for cheap. This is the first sweater I’ve ever made so it’s mostly just for practice. I’m using top-down raglan style.

I used this youtube video  as a resource for this project.

3. Soft fingerless gloves.

This yarn is Danube DK (color 311) from Crystal Palace Yarn. It is Nylon, Wool, and Rayon, and incredibly soft and gorgeous. I highly recommend it. I picked it up at Yarn in Montpelier for $6.80 (for 163 yds/50g).

I am using size 4 needles and I roughly followed these instructions. I have made several pairs of gloves like these before, which I will also post at a later time.

I am actually going to end this post here and I’ll post my upcoming projects tomorrow.

Introduction

Knitting and Other Creative Endeavors

Who I Am

My name is Sophie, and I’m a (almost) 21-year-old college student who goes to school in Rochester, NY, and spends her summers in her hometown in the green mountains of VT.

At school, I major in a program called Digital Humanities & Social Sciences. It’s a combination of programming, digital design, and the humanities. As you can probably guess, I am very creative but also have a highly organized mind. This makes knitting a very good fit for me.

I’m an avid TV fan, and I’m currently watching the following shows (either on Netflix or on air):

  • The Office (UK)
  • Portlandia
  • The 100
  • Lost
  • Doctor Who
  • iZombie

What I Do

I am currently (as of July 4th) in the midst of my summer vacation, and using it to complete all sorts of crafting projects. I work full time for the state Agency of Transportation, and I sometimes have time on the job to work on personal projects. I use this time to knit, often while I listen to music or podcasts.

My favorite podcasts right now are Stuff You Should Know, and Stuff Mom Never Told You, but I am also looking for a good crafting or knitting podcast. Do you have any favorite podcasts? Let me know down below!

I buy as much of my yarn as possible from local yarn stores around the state, and I will be participating in the Great Northern Yarn Haul, which starts this Saturday, July 7th! I travel around the state for work, so I will hopefully have plenty of opportunity to visit local shops.

Do you have a favorite yarn shop in Vermont or the Rochester area? What is your favorite type or brand of yarn to use? Let me know in the comments!

On This Blog

Perhaps this is overly ambitious, but I am going to try to update this blog daily, or as often as possible, with updates on my latest knitting projects. Currently I am working on a pair of gloves, a hat, and a sweater. More information on those projects (and my future projects) in my upcoming posts.

I have only recently started trying to learn more about knitting beyond the basics, so this blog will also be my journey to improve my work, and maybe someday get to the level where I can start helping others.

Things I am currently working on learning:

  • lace knitting
  • double knitting
  • raglan sweaters
  • cables

Aside from knitting, I have several other creative hobbies, including:

  • makeup art
  • watercolor painting
  • writing
  • calligraphy
  • shopping (sort of kidding)

I will most likely post updates on all of these at some point. Let me know in the comments if there’s something specific you’d like to see more of!
